Over the years, as I’ve worked with tarot, I’ve realized that reading cards is much more than memorizing meanings or following spreads. Many times, even experienced readers miss the real message. Here’s what I’ve learned from my own journey—and what I recommend for anyone who wants to read tarot accurately and intuitively.
1. Understand the Story, Don’t Just Memorize
When I first started learning tarot, I tried to memorize every card meaning. But soon I noticed that mechanical reading never felt right—it lacked flow, depth, and connection. Tarot cards are like characters in a story. Each one has a message, a lesson, and a role in the bigger picture. The key is to understand the story, not just learn definitions. Ask yourself, “What is this card trying to say here? How does it fit in the seeker’s life?”
2. Only Read When You Are Centered
One mistake I often see is trying to read when we are tired, stressed, or emotionally unsettled. I’ve done it myself, and the reading felt…off. Tarot reflects your energy, so if you’re not centered, the guidance can be unclear or misleading. Before a reading, take a few moments to breathe, meditate, or ground yourself. A calm mind gives clear messages.
3. Keep Your Cards Energetically Clean
Your cards carry energy, and just like any spiritual tool, they need care. I regularly cleanse mine with smudging, sunlight, or crystals. On full moon nights, I charge them while invoking the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether. This practice keeps the cards aligned with universal energy and ensures the guidance you receive is pure and strong.
4. See Beyond Specific Categories
Many readers try to memorize meanings for love, health, or finance separately. I’ve learned this limits intuition. Every card has three layers: its meaning, its guidance, and its potential obstacle. Understanding these layers allows you to read the cards for any question, without getting boxed into categories.
5. Trust Your Intuition
Tarot is a conversation—not just with the cards, but with your inner voice. Often, subtle impressions, images, or feelings that pop up during a reading carry the real guidance. Early in my practice, I ignored these intuitive nudges and lost important messages. Now, I always let my intuition speak—it’s the heart of accurate readings.
6. Reflect on Every Reading
After each session, I take time to review and journal. What messages came true? Where could I have interpreted better? Reflection is essential—it trains your mind, sharpens your intuition, and deepens your connection with the cards.
In the end: Tarot is not just a tool to predict the future—it’s a path to understanding life and becoming the reader of your own journey. When you honor the cards, respect the energy, and trust your inner voice, the guidance you give and receive becomes powerful, clear, and transformative.
